The Raw Data
If you want to get straight to the point. Here you go!
I do suggest you read a little further for information on how we came up with this information on Brazilian, Malaysian, Peruvian and Indian hair extension life expectancy.
Where Did I Get This From?
Well, duh, there is TON’s of information on the internet! From hair extensions online stores and creeping people’s post on review sites such as Youtube, Reddit and Facebook (just to name a few). I took notes as I read and compiled it into this little blog for you so you can shop better for hair extensions.
I Know You Do Not Care
The world of buying hair is so crazy! It will literally give you a migraine or something. There is SO MUCH information and products and services and types and...AHHH!
You get where I am coming from and you probably know the feeling. All you really want is to update your look with a couple clicks and a credit card but you keep getting side track with new hair textures and collections.
Also, I know there are those cheap hair extension buyers who really don’t give a flip about the quality of hair. Hell, I was one of em’! Just want to rock that Rihanna look and that’s about it!
I get it...I get it!
But ladies and my gents ;-) Let’s take a moment to think about how much we have spent in the last 6 months on just hair extensions alone(and let’s not think about those installation costs)? So, I don't know about you, but until I found my dream hair extension store - I was spending $100 a pop on updating my look on a regular basis!
I want you to shop smarter!
It is important to look your best - however, it’s important to take care of that pocket book as well. My hope is that this quick read will make the hair weave purchase process easier for you - so you can cut through the crap that is out there and get what you really need and want.
A Little Less Straight To The Point
The major textures high user hair extension wearers are buying these days are Brazilian, Malaysian, Peruvian and my old school Indian Hair.
Brazilian and Peruvian hair ranked highest as they are a ‘higher grade’ of hair. That means you should see a description of the hair that mentions the hair type (ei. Brazilian). Also, they should mention that it is Remy or Virgin Hair. Lastly, you should see a number - somewhere between 8A - 10 grade level.
These grades is somewhat an industry standard for how quality hair is but not necessarily accurate. However, if a seller is bold enough to say their hair is Brazilian or Peruvian, well, you know it’s the good stuff!
This Brazilian and Peruvian hair is usually thicker and fuller. The hair is more coarse - so that means that it is more durable with watches and does not tangle easily. Also, they can take the heat, the chemicals and the styling you want to give it! This is ‘pedal to the medal’ hair!
In saying all of this you can understand why this hair lasts for a year or more.
I should also mentioned that it does depend on your care of the hair. If you take care of it - it will take care of you!
Indian and Malaysian ranked a little lower but still has a good use life. Indian and Malaysian hair are in the grades that are lesser than 8a standard. I personally wore some expensive Indian hair for 1 whole year. However, due to the texture of these hair extensions I suppose people are not getting the full and thickness after about 6 months.
Again, I have to add the disclaimer that you have to treat your hair weaves nice to get the max value of of them.
How Are You Putting Them In?
Another factor that weighs heavy on the life expectancy of your hair extensions is your application method.
Each of these methods are pretty cool! However, when doing my research, I realized that most of the users where using clip in hair extensions or sew in hair extension method. Which makes sense.
Both with clip ins and sew in method your hair extensions are completely reusable. Giving you hair extension purchase a lot more wear as you can apply and reapply several times. Needless to say a well made lace wig will take you far!
So, keep that little factor in mind.
Addiction and What To Do?
Okay there you have it!
I, of course, am going to push you to think hard before you buy.
There are a lot of companies out there that will sell you on the cheap hair extensions. BUT if you plan your hairstyles instead of impulse buying - you may end up better off. I know the world of fashion is changing everyday!
I am totally addicted to Pinterest and Instagram. They feed me just want I am ALWAYS hungry for - THE LATEST in fashion. However, as a high user of hair extensions, I have to think - Can I get this look with a hair purchase that will last me? Does this look have a lot of layering. If so, probably not going to be able to use those bundles I bought again. Also, is this look that I want something I can achieve with a lace closure or a lace wig?
All these thoughts are good stuff! It will also help your budget.
Ok hair extension loves - until next time…
